Canada’s First National Men’s Issues Conference in Ottawa September 17th

TORONTO, ON — (September 12, 2016) – Most people have never heard of men’s issues, despite the fact that they can be matters of life and death. In response, the Canadian Centre for Men and Families (CCMF) will host the first annual national men’s issues conference, to take place at Ottawa City Hall on Saturday, September 17th, 2016.

Men in Canada die on average four years younger than women while over 75% of suicides are men. The federal government has launched a National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, though there are almost three times as many missing and murdered Indigenous men and boys. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“Men’s issues are as serious as those of any other group, but differ drastically in public awareness, media attention and government investment,” said CCMF Ottawa President and conference organizer David Shackleton.

CCMF has emerged as Canada’s preeminent educational charity focused on men’s issues. CCMF’s Ottawa branch will host a day-long series of talks and panels on the theme “Positive Advocacy Toward Gender Equality.” The conference will feature speakers from across Canada on a diverse range of subjects: bias against men and boys in education, health and law; university campus culture; the difficulties of advocating for men and boys.

The Conference will seek to understand why men’s issues are routinely marginalized and how we can make progress on behalf of our male loved ones.

The motto of the Canadian Association for Equality is “Equality Means Equality for Everyone.”

“At present, men and boys are the group left out of our focus on gender equality, which is why CCMF is choosing to highlight men’s issues with a national conference in the national capital.” said Shackleton.
