SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
The Executive Director is at the centre of all operations at the Canadian Centre for Men and Families (CCMF) – Calgary. It is a challenging role that demands patience, diplomacy and hard work, as well as attention to detail and an ability to multitask. The individual must be a great team player who puts the best interest of the centre ahead of him or herself and who is able to command the respect and trust of the personnel and volunteers that he or she works with on a daily basis.
PRIMARY SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director is responsible for designing, organizing and fulfilling the quarterly/annual fund raising budgets and activities for the Centre. The Executive Director is responsible for the marketing of Centre programs and creating strategic alliances with other community agencies. The Executive Director is responsible for working with the team of volunteers at the CCMF to create and maintain a safe, respectful, welcoming and supportive space for men and families. The Executive Director is responsible for managing the totality of the client experience at the Canadian Centre for Men and Families – Calgary as well as the development, operation and evaluation of all in-house programs and services.

About the Canadian Centre for Men and Families
The Canadian Centre for Men and Families is a unique mental health and social service facility serving as a hub of programs for boys, men, fathers and their families. Our Vision focuses on three critical areas:
- Reduce suicide among men at high-risk through effective intervention programs.
- Empower fathers undergoing separation or divorce through legal clinics and fathering groups that strengthen the father-child relationship, while working to promote positive social attitudes towards fatherhood.
- Support men who are experiencing domestic abuse while working with other agencies to improve services.
KEY OPERATIONAL AREAS OF FOCUS & ATTENTION
- Complete intake and assessment of new participants, ensuring program eligibility, and assessing immediate and longer-term participant needs and goals.
- Recruit and place qualified counselling students and practicum interns for CCMF programs/services.
- Provide crisis intervention counselling and support, including completing suicide risk assessments, and creating safety plans with participants dealing with abuse and violence.
- Assist clients to access third party resources, such as housing, shelter, income assistance, employment support, legal assistance and other resources.
- Ensure confidentiality, collection of data and completion of case file documentation as required.
Program Operations, Delivery and Evaluation
- Responsible for scheduling all appointments with staff at the CCMF, including individual counseling sessions, peer support meetings and educational workshops.
- Responsible for recruiting participants into group programs and ensuring programs are kept at capacity.
- Responsible to liaise between clients and program facilitators and counsellors.
- Responsible for implementing evaluation processes with client program participants.
- Supports the development and improvement of new and existing programs.
- Oversee the use of space at the CCMF; monitoring the overall physical and emotional safety of the space; managing potentially escalating situations.
- Provide program coverage and support as needed, including tasks such as assisting with preparation, set up and clean up.
- Train, supervise and support volunteers.
- Supervise and manage the activities of any other CCMF employees such as student interns.
- Responsible for the monthly bookkeeping and financial reporting.
- Keep the Alberta Governance Board appropriately informed about CCMF programs and activities.
- Supports the marketing and advertising of programs.
- Supports community outreach, networking and strategic alliance creation with other agencies.
The following are ideal qualifications of the successful candidate. Candidates who do not have every item in this list are still welcome to apply.
- Knowledge and experience working with boys, men and fathers
- Experience working in drop-in settings, working within a peer-support framework, or experience providing counselling and support related to such issues as homelessness, mental health, trauma, transitioning and/or coming out, substance use, family support, accessing legal support, housing, employment and education
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team, to problem solve, and to remain flexible and able to adapt within a busy and changing environment
- Master Degree in social work (MSW), psychology, Social Service Work, Community Health or a related program and/or an equivalent combination of education/experience is ideal. Registered Social Workers, Registered Social Service Workers without an MSW, or others with equivalent experience are encouraged to apply.
- Experience working in drop-in settings, working within a peer-support framework
- Ability to manage conflict, crisis and escalating situations calmly and confidently
- Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
The Executive Director position will begin on a part-time basis (March 1, 2020) and grow into a full-time position as the finances and resources of the Centre allow.
The Executive Director is under the authority of and will report to the Canadian Centre for Men and Families – Alberta Governance Board.
