The Odyssey provided me with the opportunity to meet with a Community Engagement Worker with the Peel District Children’s Aid Society. Peter Amponsah is extremely dedicated to his work on behalf of children and their families. Through his education and experiences, he is very aware of the difficulties some families deal with as they navigate the obstacles they face in the broader community.
My meeting with Peter was very productive. We share many of the same values and goals. I was able to provide him with examples of the materials that I am using with parents that have young sons. He made me aware of the reality that my children’s books are somewhat limited in that they are likely to be value only to white boys. As a result, I have arranged to produce a series of books that feature black boys as the central characters.
Thank you, Peter Amponsah, for raising my awareness. The Odyssey continues and we all learn from it.
